Spirit Runner is a FREE app that tracks physical activity and honours Aboriginal culture. It was designed & tested based on the input of Aboriginal youth, artists and youth leaders. The youth shared the importance of developing an app to reflect their culture. In essence, they wanted the app to feel like it “belonged” to them.

Spirit Runner utilizes new technology:

• Records over 30 types of activities
• Provides GPS, Pedometer and Stopwatch  functions
• Includes hundreds of motivational quotes
• Email\text\tweet workouts & quotes to coaches & friends
• Achievement badges are awarded when goals are met

Available through iTunes and www.spiritrunnerapp.com

Artwork

The art was created by local Edmonton Aboriginal artist, Jessica Desmoulin. The opening screen design speaks to the youth and reinforces its purpose, to motivate and engage Aboriginal youth to be active. In Jessica’s words, “The picture means young and spirited. The hare represents the female spirit and the fox the male and they are racing. Behind them is an eagle feather.” The four tabs at the bottom of the opening screen are represented by a bison, fox, raven and bear, and the background colour represents the four seasons. Two comments stand out from a 10 and 11-year-old:  “The art is bright, proud and spiritual.” “It is calming, down to earth and spirit-lifting.”
